A Message from bSAS President & CEO

Dear friends:

From the mid-1990s to 2003, funds available for the treatment of substance abuse in Baltimore City rose dramatically.  Correspondingly, the City marked important progress in reducing deaths from drug overdoses – perhaps the most dramatic measure of the pain and devastation of substance abuse.

In recent years, funding for substance abuse treatment has leveled off.  Our challenge is to continue to make progress by making prevention, treatment, and recovery programs a priority among the many choices faced by policy makers, foundations, and everyday citizens.  We must make it a priority not only because of the damage in lives, liberty, and property inflicted by addiction and abuse.  We must support this effort because we know the investment will pay off.  Research and experience unmistakably prove that a comprehensive, data-driven system will reduce the number of adolescents and adults in our community whose lives are lost or damaged by addiction.

The evidence shows that treatment works and recovery happens.  We look forward to your help in bringing substance abuse services to those in need, thereby creating a brighter future for our City.
